Microneedling vs. Chemical Peels: Which is Best for Acne Scars?

Dealing with post-acne erythema or atrophic scarring can be deeply frustrating. Fortunately, clinical skin resurfacing offers highly effective, permanent solutions. The two most sought-after modalities in our Acne & Blemish Control protocols are Microneedling and Chemical Peels.

Understanding Microneedling

Microneedling involves creating controlled physical micro-injuries in the dermal layer. This effectively tricks the body into triggering its natural wound-healing cascade, stimulating fresh collagen and elastin production.

  • Best for: Atrophic scars (indented scars like boxcar, ice pick, or rolling scars).
  • Downtime: Typically 24-48 hours of mild redness.
  • Long-term benefit: Structurally thickens the dermis over a 3-6 month period.

Understanding Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels utilize specialized medical-grade acids to dissolve the lipid bonds between dead skin cells, forcing rapid cellular turnover and bringing fresh, unblemished skin to the surface.

  • Best for: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (the dark or red flat spots left behind by breakouts) and active acne.
  • Downtime: Ranges from 0 to 7 days of active flaking, depending on peel depth.

During a comprehensive consultation at our Harley Street clinic, we often recommend a hybrid approach. Alternating between these modalities within a customized Skin Rejuvenation plan ensures we tackle both the textural indentations and the surface pigmentation simultaneously.
